Signature Campaign in Sydney for human rights abuse in Nepal
Amnesty
International Australia (Manly Group) lunched a signature campaign in Manly on 20th May
2006 with the theme ‘Nepal’.
There were three letters presented for signatures: 1) asking Australian Government what they are doing to promote human
rights in Nepal; 2) asking Nepalese government to implement the 10
recommendations of the UN Working Group on Enforced or involuntary
Disappearances and 3) asking Nepal’s king to disclose the condition of
disappeared people and requesting to stop the climate of impunity that allows
disappearances to happen. They are very keen to get an answer from the parties
addressed as soon as possible. This campaign ran for 6 hrs from 8:00 am to 14:00 pm. During this period Nepalese folk music
were played and Nepalese food (SelRoti and Aaloo ko
Achar) also served. Hundreds of people have signed
the letters. Members from Nepalese Forum for Human Rights and People’s
Democracy (NEHURIPD), Australia were also participated and helped to
make more effective of signature campaign. NEHURIPD’s
members were busy for answering questions from
the public about current political developments and human rights
situations in Nepal. The people signing the
letters all seemed very pleased that Nepalese ‘People’s Power'
resulted in the re-instatement of parliament and the release of some of the
political prisoners. The signature campaign was the
most successful to date hosted by the Manly group of Amnesty International
Australia, and they collected more
signatures than they ever have before in support of
ending human rights abuses.
